Campaigning to re-connect Bude and Holsworthy

Bude-Okehampton Timetable (September 2024)

Bude-Okehampton Timetable (September 2024)

As of September 1st, new timetables for the 6/6A bus service have been introduced, resulting in significant changes to the frequency of bus services connecting Bude and Holsworthy to train stations. Unfortunately, these changes represent a further decline in the already limited public transport options available to the residents of these towns.

In the three years since Okehampton Station reopened, bus-rail links between Bude, Holsworthy, and the nearest train stations have progressively worsened. What was once a two-hourly service has been reduced to a mix of three-hourly and six-hourly services. For towns the size of Bude and Holsworthy, this is unacceptable. In fact, these are the only towns of their size, or smaller, in Cornwall and Devon without an hourly bus link to a train station.

Public transport and, in particular, rail connectivity are crucial for fostering economic growth and improving the life chances of local residents. Efficient bus-rail links can play a transformative role in connecting people to jobs, education, and services. The lack of reliable transport options for Bude and Holsworthy places a burden on residents, limiting opportunities and isolating these communities.

It is deeply concerning that both Cornwall Council and Devon County Council have presided over this ongoing degradation of bus-rail connectivity. Despite being made fully aware of the situation by groups like Connect Bude and OkeRail, the councils have allowed the situation to worsen. This neglect not only highlights the disparity between Bude and Holsworthy and other towns in the region but also suggests a disregard for the very real concerns raised by local residents.

While the new Number 6 bus timetable may be a reality for now, it is crucial that action is taken to reverse these changes. Bude and Holsworthy deserve better – improved bus services that connect to rail stations will help unlock the economic potential of these towns and ensure a better quality of life for their residents.

We urge the local councils to reconsider their approach and prioritize the needs of these communities. Reliable, frequent public transport isn’t just a convenience – it’s a necessity for the future prosperity of Bude, Holsworthy, and their people.

Connect Bude: Advocating for a Better Bus Service

We are actively lobbying for improvements, including:

  • Faster journey times: A more direct route with fewer stops could significantly reduce travel time.
  • Increased frequency: More regular buses throughout the day would make it easier to plan trips and reduce waiting times.
  • Improved connectivity to the rail network: A direct link to Okehampton Station and better timing for the trains would provide seamless access to regional and national rail services.
  • Liveried bus service: Clear paintwork or signs on a direct bus to Bude and Holsworthy would be much clearer for visitors to spot and help drivers realise the greener puiblic transport option.

We believe a faster, more direct, and more regular bus service is essential for North Cornwall’s residents and visitors. Stay tuned for future updates on our progress in advocating for these improvements. If you agree with our cause, then please support us or become a member.
