Connect Bude Reflects on a Successful TWSW Autumn General Meeting
The TravelWatch SouthWest (TWSW) Autumn General Meeting, held on 11th October 2024, was a vibrant gathering of transport advocates, industry professionals, and community members. This year’s event highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance public transport services across the Southwest and provided insights into future developments that will benefit local passengers.

The event kicked off with a warm welcome from David Northey, Chair of TWSW, and Bryony Chetwode, TWSW Secretary. A packed agenda followed, featuring compelling speakers and thought-provoking discussions.
One of the most anticipated sessions came from Mel Watson, Director of MW Associates PTS Ltd, who delivered a keynote address on “A New Era for Bus Users.” Watson stressed the importance of making buses a desirable mode of transport, surpassing customer expectations, and shifting the public narrative around bus travel. She highlighted how critical it is for bus services to be integrated, reliable, and customer-focused, key steps that can make buses a more attractive option for both users and non-users alike. We, of course, agree with this!

Participants also enjoyed a thought-provoking panel, including Dan Okey, who spoke about the challenges of adapting timetables and services. The lively Q&A showcased the growing interest in making public transport more accessible, efficient, and inclusive.
Cornwall’s Success as a Model for the Future:
One of the standout sessions was from Nigel Blackler, who shared insights into why public transport in Cornwall works well for passengers. Cornwall’s approach to creating a fully integrated public transport system, with its “One Ticket, One Network, One Timetable” strategy, was applauded as a potential blueprint for other regions.
The Cornwall model demonstrates how collaboration, customer focus, and strategic investment can transform public transport, leading to improved passenger satisfaction and increased ridership. Discussions emphasized that Cornwall’s achievements are not just about infrastructure, but about a broader commitment to meeting passengers’ needs.

The meeting closed with a spirited panel discussion on government changes to the public transport framework and their potential to better serve passenger interests.
