As we look ahead to the continued growth and development of public transport in Devon, the upcoming Okehampton Interchange represents one of the most exciting projects in recent years. This new station, positioned between Crediton and Okehampton, is poised to bring significant benefits to the region, offering new opportunities for local communities and businesses alike. In this blog post, we’ll explore the details shared during the recent stakeholder update and highlight what this development means for West Devon and beyond.
A Brief History
The re-opening of the Dartmoor Line in November 2021 marked a turning point in the restoration of rail services in Devon. This success has paved the way for further investment, with funding now secured for the new Okehampton Interchange. Backed by the UK Government, Devon County Council (DCC), and West Devon Borough Council (WDBC), this project is the largest public transport investment in West Devon in a generation. It is expected to be a key driver of economic growth by providing a sustainable, low-carbon alternative for travel into Exeter and the broader national rail network.
Key Features of the Okehampton Interchange
The Okehampton Interchange is designed with both the environment and local convenience in mind. Here’s a quick overview of what we can expect when the station is completed:
- New Infrastructure and Facilities: The station will be unstaffed but feature a range of customer-friendly amenities, including a ticket vending machine, bicycle storage, a waiting shelter, defibrillator access, and signage to help navigate the site. Additionally, it will have CCTV for safety, EV charging points, and accessible parking spaces.
- Hourly Train Service: The station will be served by an existing GWR hourly train service running from 07:00 to 22:30. This integration ensures minimal disruption to the current timetable while accommodating a 2.5-minute dwell time for stops at the new station.
- Passenger Demand: Forecasts anticipate a significant uptake in usage, with a projected 164,000 passengers in the first year. This demand highlights the importance of the station in serving a growing residential and employment area, alongside its potential to boost connectivity for a wider rural catchment.
Positive Economic Impact
This new station promises to bring considerable economic benefits to Okehampton and its surrounding areas. By improving connections to Exeter and the national rail network, it will open up opportunities for both residential and business growth, while also providing a greener alternative for commuters. The integration of cycle paths and bus services, particularly the No.6 bus service connecting to Bude, will further improve accessibility to the station.
The potential for growth doesn’t end at the borders of Devon. As highlighted during discussions, demand from Cornwall, though not fully explored, could further increase usage of the station. The inclusion of bus connections, subject to funding from both Devon and Cornwall councils, would create a seamless experience for passengers from neighboring regions.
GWR & Network Rail Update
Great Western Railway (GWR) and Network Rail have outlined the progress and upcoming milestones for the project:
- Station Design: Octavius, the framework contractor, continues to develop the station’s design, which is now at the Prior Application stage for planning.
- Timeline: The target decision date for planning approval is 10th October 2024. Enabling works, including vegetation clearance and piling, are set to begin in autumn 2024, with the station expected to be operational by spring 2026.
- Further Development: Initial designs will be completed by the end of 2024, with construction fully underway by spring/summer 2025. As part of these works, a track slew is scheduled for March 2025.
Next Steps
The project is entering a critical phase with ongoing developments and upcoming milestones. As we move forward, it’s clear that the Okehampton Interchange is a vital component of the region’s transport infrastructure.
For those in the Bude and wider Devon area, this project is not just about building a new station—it’s about building a sustainable future for the region. With strong local support, ongoing collaboration between stakeholders, and a clear vision for integrated transport links, the Okehampton Interchange is set to become a major asset for both passengers and businesses alike.
Connect Bude will continue to monitor the progress of this exciting development, advocating for improved bus and rail links to Bude and beyond. Stay tuned for more updates as this project moves forward.
